Artist's Description

This is the entrance to Maryhill Museum in the Gorge built by Sam Hill, located at 35 Maryhill Museum Drive, Goldendale, WA 98620.

Maryhill Museum of Art was dedicated in 1926 by Queen Marie of Romania and opened to the public in 1940; it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Sam Hill (1857–1931), founder of the Maryhill Museum of Art, was one of the most colorful and influential figures in the Pacific Northwest in the early 1900s. He was a successful businessman, world traveler, builder of monuments, and early advocate of paved roads.
